In our New Year’s Edition, I reviewed the CBS All Access original program -Star Trek Discovery.
On January 17 th the second season of Discovery kicked off. While I did enjoy last season’s show, I felt it went off the rails in the violence department and lacked the humor for which Star Trek is known. Fortunately, this season has gone back to the Gene Roddenberry vision.
The first episode opens with the USS Discovery answering a distress call from the USS Enterprise. Remember, this is set about 10 years prior to Captain Kirk. The commanding officer of the Enterprise is Captain Christopher Pike, played by Anson Mount. He actually is playing the
character in a similar fashion to Bruce Greenwood’s portrayal in the movies. He has a great sense of humor and takes command of Discovery to go on a special mission for the Federation.
This is where the fun begins.
I will not go into detail so as not to spoil the show for those of you who have not yet had a chance to watch. I will say that finally, it feels like Trek! It also pays homage to an episode in Star Trek Voyager. Those of you who have watched Voyager will understand after you view the
second episode of Discovery.
The special effects are outstanding and the plot, so far, seems to be very Trek. I will give you a full review after the season. In the meantime, “Beam me up Scotty”!
