Book Review: Bridging Myths and Machines: Why Gerry White’s New Book Should Be on Every Desk

As an educator who’s spent two decades helping students and professionals adapt to technology’s ever-accelerating pace, I can say this without hesitation: The Evolution of Artificial Intelligence: Our Journey from Myth to Machine is the book I didn’t know I was waiting for.

What Gerry White has done here is rare. He’s taken a topic that too often gets trapped in extremes, either techno-hype or dystopian dread, and given us something clear, grounded, and even hopeful. This isn’t a textbook, but it’s deeply informed. It’s not science fiction, but it honors the dreams and warnings of that genre. And it’s certainly not tech-bro evangelism. White writes with the calm authority of someone who’s worked in the trenches of AI integration in classrooms, college curricula, and educational technology systems. That experience shows on every page.

The book traces the long arc of AI, from ancient myths of automatons and clay golems to modern breakthroughs like GPT-4o, Claude, and self-driving systems. Each chapter builds carefully, helping readers understand not just the technical milestones but the philosophical, cultural, and ethical underpinnings of them. I especially appreciated how White threads in thinkers like Descartes, Hobbes, and Alan Turing, making it clear that today’s AI didn’t come out of nowhere. It’s part of a very old human story.

But what really sets this book apart is its accessibility. Whether you’re a teacher, student, policymaker, or just a curious reader trying to make sense of what’s coming, this book meets you where you are. The stand alone glossary is readable, and the educator guide is gold. There’s a rare honesty in how White deals with the open questions: Will AI solve global problems? Could it be hijacked by bad actors? Might it quietly overtake us while we’re not paying attention? He doesn’t sugarcoat, but he doesn’t catastrophize either.

What he does is offer clarity. And in this moment, when AI headlines dominate the news and most people still don’t know what a “transformer” is (outside of a Michael Bay movie),  clarity might be the most important thing we can offer one another.

White’s voice is warm, informed, and grounded in practice. That makes The Evolution of Artificial Intelligence not just a must-read, but a book you’ll want to revisit as the future keeps unfolding as do new chapters.
