Sweet Indulgence for a Cause!

Sweet Indulgence for a Cause!

Focus on Philanthropy
As a child at family gatherings, Mark remembers always checking the cake pan to see if his favorite cake were inside. Mark enthusiastically says, “My Grandmother’s triple chocolate cake was worth the effort to clean my dinner plate no matter how many vegetables were served”. Sharing this sweet indulgence has become a family tradition for the Rosenfields - Mark, Sharon, Hannah (16) and Hayley (14). Together they have baked as many as eighty cakes to give to friends, co-workers, teachers, and neighbors during the holidays. Each year they enjoy delivering these cakes to see the joy it brings. There’s now an additional reason for the Rosenfields to offer these cakes over the next several months. Hannah and Hayley have the opportunity visit France this summer to play soccer and watch the ...

by Jeff S. Howell, Jr., Esq. Why Pharrell Williams’ home grown “Atlantic Park” development is the right move for the Dome Site On January 15, 2019, the Virginia Beach City Council approved a terms sheet for a project widely known as “The Wave”; a $329 million development that will occupy the long vacant Dome site at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The visionaries behind this project are led by none other than Virginia Beach’s own Pharrell Williams. So far the details of the project have been unfairly marred in controversy flowing from the ever-present riptide of local politics. Nevertheless, the published renderings promise something truly special: a mixed-use development supporting office and retail spaces, restaurants, and, of course, the signature wave pool so many of the ...

The Chrysler Museum Celebrates the Brilliance of American Watercolors in Upcoming Exhibition

Art & Culture
The Chrysler Museum of Art will explore the heights of the American watercolor movement in Watercolor: An American Medium. The exhibition features spectacular works by the leading watercolor artists of the 19th century as well as modern artists. The exhibition includes selections from the Chrysler Museum of Art’s collection of works on paper, as well as works borrowed from collections throughout Hampton Roads, including the Hampton University Museum and several private owners. Because the watercolors in the Chrysler’s collection are especially sensitive to light, they are only displayed for limited periods to preserve the richness of their color.  This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to view some of the Chrysler’s hidden gems. “Bringing together these works from the Ch...

Manny’s Movies – Star Trek Discovery

Entertainment
In our New Year’s Edition, I reviewed the CBS All Access original program -Star Trek Discovery. On January 17 th the second season of Discovery kicked off. While I did enjoy last season’s show, I felt it went off the rails in the violence department and lacked the humor for which Star Trek is known. Fortunately, this season has gone back to the Gene Roddenberry vision. The first episode opens with the USS Discovery answering a distress call from the USS Enterprise. Remember, this is set about 10 years prior to Captain Kirk. The commanding officer of the Enterprise is Captain Christopher Pike, played by Anson Mount. He actually is playing the character in a similar fashion to Bruce Greenwood’s portrayal in the movies. He has a great sense of humor and takes command of Discovery to ...

The Historic Virginia Beach Recount –  a lesson in organized chaos By Bruce Meyer The November 6 th , 2018 Election was not just about control of Congress. It was also the date citizens of Virginia Beach went to the polls to elect a new Mayor, 7 members of City Council and 6 members of School Board. When the dust settled, there were some upsets and three Council races were within a 530 vote margin out of a total of 171,361 people who voted! Not everyone voted in each race (we will get to that in little bit). At the end of the night, it looked like Brad Martin had upset the longtime incumbent, Louis Jones in the Bayside Borough. Dee Oliver looked like she had beaten incumbent John Moss for an At-large Seat and David Nygaard had upset incumbent John Uhrin in the Beach Boroug...

Legislative Update By Senator Bill Desteph The 2019 General Assembly is off to a fast start, as is expected of a short legislative session. A lot is accomplished in 45 days. Week 3 saw record crowds, with visitors, committee meetings, and legislative receptions adding to the excitement. It is important to stress the air of enthusiasm and camaraderie in Richmond. We are there to work together to accomplish good things for the Commonwealth.  The General Assembly provides an opportunity to go on the record, to take a stand, to do what’s right. It’s not all about the legislation we pass – it’s also about the legislation that we prevent from getting out of committee. I am proud to play a role in which laws affect the citizens of my district. There are many significant issues cu...

Legislative Update By Delegate Glenn Davis While the federal government had been shut down, our State Capitol has been open and I continue to work with my colleagues to ensure that Virginia remains open for business. This session, I have introduced fifteen bills and am the chief co-patron of seven others. This legislation covers a wide range of issues including advanced diplomas for high school vocational curricula, public charter schools, incentives for small businesses, increasing access to medical CBD treatments, health insurance protocols, and coverage for the treatment of autism. These are commonsense measures to move Virginia forward while ensuring no one gets left behind. They are consistent with my priorities as well as our shared Republican values. House Bill 2126 forces ...

Legislative Update – Delegate Barry Knight

Politics
Legislative Update By Delegate Barry Knight Since 2009, I have had the unique privilege and honor to represent the citizens of the 81st House District in the Virginia House of Delegates. I was asked by the City of Virginia Beach and Oceana Naval Master Jet Base to patron legislation that would keep trespassing drones out of military landing zones, thereby not adding unnecessary risk to the lives of those who serve to protect our freedoms. HB 1636 seeks to protect military aircraft by prohibiting use of a drone within a 1-mile radius of any military airfield or helicopter landing zone. Drones are a new and exciting technology but use must be done so in a responsible manner. HB 1637 creates a special license plate that bears the legend “PROTECT SEA LIFE”. This bill reflects Vi...

Legislative Update – By Delegate Jason Miyares

Legislative Update By Delegate Jason Miyares The honor of my life is representing the citizens of Virginia Beach in the Virginia House of Delegates. In 1965, my mother Miriam Miyares fled Cuba as a scared, penniless 19 year old girl, leaving a country where the government has no consent of the governed to almost fifty years to the day in 2015 being able to vote for her son to represent her in one of the oldest democracies in the world. This is truly an example of the American Miracle. 2019 is the 400th Anniversary of the founding of the oldest continuous democratic body in the Western Hemisphere, the Virginia General Assembly. Virginia has come a long way since the first meeting of the legislative body in a Jamestown church on a hot July 30th, 1619. However, the same duties ...

They said it all over town for almost 50 years – in Portsmouth, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Newport News and Hampton. Shipyard workers, bank presidents, high school students, store clerks, folks in military and first responders’ uniforms, doctors, lawyers, teachers – men and women, young and old, all over Hampton Roads for almost 50 years said, “I’m going to go see Freddie” – and every single one of them knew EXACTLY what they meant. They were going to see Freddie Aron at Roger’s Men’s Clothing Store in Portsmouth, Virginia, and it was likely to be the highlight of their day. Named Rogers by Freddie’s father Max in 1949, “Roger” meant “OK, all is good” from those who served in the military during World War II. This amazing men’s clothing store, from a MBA business school persp...
