Joe Biden: Creepy Dude or Love Machine?

Joe Biden: Creepy Dude or Love Machine?

Headlines
He almost had me.  For a moment last Wednesday I actually felt a twinge of sympathy for Joe Biden. Why not? I used to like him. Biden was the kind of common-sense Democrat I voted for before he became a they-want-to-put-y’all-back-in-chains kind of veep.  I watched the video Biden made last week to apologize for pawing and sniffing women, children and even some men over the past several decades. And it was pathetic. There he sat, snowy-haired and tieless, the guy with nothing but participant ribbons to show for jumping into presidential primary after primary, looking for one last hurrah. How irritating must it be to see that old commie, Bernie Sanders - a year older at 77 - getting all the love while you’re being accused of being a serial groper. In the video Joe a...
What Is Augmented/Mixed Reality?

What Is Augmented/Mixed Reality?

Technology
Just about everyone has heard the term Augmented Reality (AR) in the tech news lately. Whether it be something like an augmented Google map, the game everyone went crazy over, Pokemon Go,  or Apple’s AR integrations in the new iPhones, Augmented Reality is coming soon to most all our mobile devices. Well great, but what is it, and how do we employ it for something useful? Augmented Reality Display Augmented Reality is a mixture of virtual reality and the camera on your phone. It simply puts images over your camera view, so you can see images overlaid on the picture. These pictures, or assets, can be anything from images and videos to 3D models and animations. Where VR puts you in a virtual environment in which you can interact with all the various assets, AR mixes the “real real...

Headlines
By Kerry Dougherty Here’s something we can all agree on: Many American newspapers are circling the drain. There are a multitude of reasons. But much of the blame goes to penny-pinching, short-sighted, unimaginative publishers. Dullards who know how to count beans but know nothing about news reporting. They’ve either laid off or bought out most experienced journalists, leaving many newsrooms in the hands of green reporters and editors with little historical knowledge of the localities they cover and without the courage to sometimes say, “Hold on, something about this story doesn’t feel right.” On top of that, pressure to get stories online means more errors - hey, they can be corrected later - asnews outlets join the arms race to spew digital information. If you want to k...

Judeo-Christian Outreach Center Helps Vincent Find a New Home By Kristin Ward The Judeo-Christian Outreach Center’s staff, partners and volunteers are celebrating 32 years of feeding the hungry and sheltering the homeless! People like Vincent. The week of Thanksgiving was an exciting time for Vincent. He signed a lease and was handed the key to a new apartment at the Housing Resource Center (HRC)! It was beginning to look like Christmas for him. The last ten months had been hard and long. The heavy equipment operator and former truck driver experienced a health crisis in February 2018. After missing too much work, Vincent lost his job and eventually his home. Never expecting to become homeless, he began living in his car in April. With the help of food stamps...

College Sports and Money By: Gary Edwards I don’t want to talk about the FBI’s investigation into college basketball. Everyone seems to be so surprised and shocked about $100,000 payments to recruits, but impermissible benefits to five-star recruits have been going on since our universities decided to dance with the revenue producing devil. Did you know the United States is the only country in the world that sponsors big-time sports at its institutions of higher learning? Perhaps the rest of the world understands it is like mixing oil and water; you can try to do it but it doesn’t work very well. College presidents, please spare me the mock indignation. You and your institutions sold your souls long ago to the television networks and shoe companies. You decided to take...

Fabulous Find – Vietnam Garden

Food
By Connie Meyer Vietnam Garden is such a treasured, hidden-gem of a restaurant in Virginia Beach, I almost hesitated to write and tell the world about it. A knowledgeable foodie friend of mine, Lisa Richmon, co-owner of Roast Rider Coffee and Tea at Hilltop, clued me in about 15 years ago, and it never disappoints! It’s the kind of family-owned, cozy restaurant that lives in an unassuming shopping center off Virginia Beach Boulevard just west of TJ Maxx. You’d likely never find it, or even venture in, if someone didn’t let you know about it.  Vietnam Garden teases the most flavor out of the freshest food imaginable. The menu is authentic and traditional but the dish explanations are in English and the friendly staff is always there to help. Here are some of our family’s favor...

Habitat for Humanity Family Moves into New Home on Christmas Eve

Community
Proving there’s “no place like home for the holidays,” Lori Boone and her daughter, Kiana, moved into their new Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads (Habitat SHR) house on Christmas Eve 2018. The new home on Lake Kennedy Drive in Suffolk is the last in a nine-home cluster built through Habitat SHR over the past three years. “It’s always special when a new Habitat family takes ownership, but it was extra special to have it happen on Christmas Eve,” said Frank Hruska, the Executive Director of Habitat SHR. “We are so grateful to our many community partners and volunteers who made the Boone home on Lake Kennedy Drive a reality before the end of the year.” Lori and Kiana had lived with Lori’s mother in a two-bedroom house in Suffolk.  Lori has worked for the past 18 years ...
