Keppie’s Korner Exclusive- Holiday Pet Safety Hi fur-rends! My name is Keppie Meyer and I am Hampton Roads Weekly’s life coach.  As you know, the holiday season is upon us and that means time for food, family and fun! However, before you deck the halls, it is important to think about all of us furry friends and the impact your holiday decorating can have on our health! With help from my friends at the ASPCA I put together a list of the do’s and don’ts to keep all of us safe throughout the season so we all have a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year to come! Decorations- Oh, Christmas Tree: It is important to secure your Christmas tree so it doesn't tip and fall, as this would cause possible injury to pets.  While it is important to water a live tree (if you have...

New NCAA Rules Assure Gap Between Haves and Have- Nots

The Francis Marion University men’s basketball team doesn’t open its 2019-2020 season until next week, but I just couldn’t wait to write my first column any longer. There is just so much to talk about! Like most politicians I will start with the low hanging fruit. My favorite foil, the NCAA, made a statement this week proclaiming support for college athletes to profit from name, image, and likeness endorsements.  Read the statement and you will be left with the impression the NCAA has finally seen the light in regard to compensation for college athletes. “We must embrace change to provide the best possible experience for college athletes,” Ohio State President Michael Drake wrote. In reality, the NCAA is being led down this road kicking and screaming. After the California leg...

Senior Family Members and Winter

Community
By Tom Knox Many of us visit our senior relatives during the holidays. Often times we see changes that are subtle, but need attention. It could be driving, hygiene, eating fresh food, etc. Some of the biggest issues happen during the winter season to seniors.  Here are some tips to keep everyone safe. The depths of winter may seem far off... but evening temperatures are already starting to drop. We have seen some of our first frosts! While it is always beautiful to see the leaves change and snow on the ground, one must remember that the winter season can be dangerous, especially for seniors in our community. Some things to remember this winter: 1) Avoid Slipping on Ice Make sure to wear shoes with good traction and non-skid soles, and stay inside until the roads are cle...

The Rise and Fall of the Republican Party and Takeover of The Democratic Party in Virginia

The Rise and Fall of the Republican Party and Takeover of The Democratic Party in Virginia

Politics
By Bruce Meyer The 2019 Election cycle has come and gone.  The Democrats outspent, out-organized and turned out more voters than the Republicans.  They achieved great success.  Voter turnout in Virginia Beach averaged a little over 40%.  In the Richmond area, it averaged approximately 50%.  An off-year election typically averages approximately 20-30%. The Republicans lost 6 seats in the House of Delegates and 2 seats in the Virginia Senate, giving the Democrats control of the Governor’s Mansion, the House and Senate for the first time since 1993.  That is 27 years! The big question being asked is “What Happened”? This is not a simple question.  There were numerous factors that contributed to the Republicans losing control.  Also, thi...

Focus on Philanthropy
By Al Midgett, Founder and CEO I founded The Noblemen in 1995 in order to pay it forward in thanks for the gift of a surviving child from extreme prematurity who was given a 2% chance of survival.  The medical expenses exceeded a half million dollars and the Hampton Roads community jumped in and supported me in countless ways.    I have enjoyed the platform of helping local kids for almost 25 years.  We meet monthly and prepare and serve dinner to 40 to 50 members (out of 100) who have the time each month to talk about our recent philanthropy and discuss possible fun and upbeat ways to raise money to support what we do. It is truly a “connect the dots” mentality as we hear from our members about current opportunities to support kids with special needs or who ar...

By Krissy Weinhardt Don’t you wish you could wave your magic wand and poof, your vacation is set?  Well, especially when planning a Disney vacation, we all know this is certainly not the case.  It is overwhelming at best, but Disney has certainly innovated its systems since the last time my family went, which was admittedly, over 15 years ago.  When helping with my plans, my dad was overcome by how many things he wished [upon a star] to have had when he was planning the trip for our family.  Having just come home from my Disney honeymoon, I have created my Disney “pro tips” to help you conquer those dreaded lines and make the most of your time in the parks.    Pro Tip #1: Download the Disney App One of the first things that is relatively new to Di...

Long-term care insurance: Advice for you and my aging parents When I started working in Home Care over 10 years ago, very few seniors had a long-term care policy that paid for their care. In 2019 over one-third of our clients had their care paid through their long-term care insurance policy.  Many do not pay any out-of-pocket expenses for their caregiver. What a change in the industry and what a great benefit! Long-term care insurance was created because Medicare and other traditional insurances do not pay for hourly Activities of Daily Living (ADL) support. ADL support includes bathing, dressing, toileting, ambulating, feeding, and cognitive support. This type of hourly support, as well as companionship, cooking, errands etc. are commonly purchased from 4 hours a day through...
