An Independent Film in Hampton Roads

An Independent Film in Hampton Roads

Art & Culture
An Independent Film, Harvey, is coming to Hampton Roads! Producer/Director team Eric Feldman and Peter J. Eaton, both Hampton Roads residents, began their collaboration in the late 90’s, writing several scripts together, one of which became the gritty, mob-thriller feature film “Gravity” – winner of Best Director award at the Beverly Hills Film Festival.  Not long after that award, Eaton was hired to direct a romantic comedy feature film shot almost entirely on the Eastern Shore and in Hampton Roads titled “Sweet Good Fortune”.  Feldman also acted in the film.   This was followed by the supernatural thriller, “Necessary Evil”, filmed in Los Angeles and starring actors Lance Henriksen and Danny Trejo which was picked up domestically by Lionsgate and distributed internat...

Community
The Very Best Example of Our Community By Connie Meyer We have had quite a few occasions lately in Hampton Roads to dig deep and define what the word “community” really means to us.  The dictionary defines community in its first iteration as, “a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.”  We think the second definition is more appropriate to us here in Hampton Roads.  “A feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.”   Yosef Nissel had never met the 35-year-old teacher who disappeared in the Atlantic back in July after that teacher had jumped in to save a student. Rabbi Bauman (above) When Nissel learned Rabbi Reuven Bauman was unfortunately missing, he dec...

Live Like Freddie: I’ll Dance at Your Wedding

Community
By Connie Meyer The youngest of Freddie’s grandchildren, my niece, got married a few months ago.  This young woman is truly special- as beautiful on the inside as she is out, her generosity of spirit and ability to sense what makes others feel at ease, reminds me exactly of her grandfather, my dad, Freddie.   As the preparations began for her wedding, there was no question that my sister would ensure the setting would be beautiful, the food delicious, the music lyrical, and the ceremony meaningful.   When I first heard the news of the young couple’s engagement, one line I’d heard Freddie say my whole life, over and over to friends and family alike, popped into my mind- “I’ll dance at your wedding”.  When I was younger, I couldn’t really understand what he meant...
AOC is a Ditz

She’s exasperating. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, that is. The charismatic freshman congresswoman from New York who runs her mouth constantly while only sometimes engaging her brain. Her latest bloviation? In an Instagram live video this week she proclaimed millennials and Generation Z to be members of the greatest, smartest most enlightened generations. They’re “badass” she boasted, noting that young people are fearless protesters, fueled, I suppose, by avocado toast, Starbucks and weed.   “I think this new generation is very profound and very strong and very brave, because they’re actually willing to go to the streets,” Ocasio-Cortez said.  How ’bout that? How about this: Read a history book, Congresswoman. You sound like a ditz. Look, I would never declare that my o...

Stronger... One More Time By Connie Meyer The staccato, quick tap of high-heeled shoes on the linoleum floor bounced off the walls of the hall.  With no other noises to compete in the darkness, the sharp sound of footsteps could be heard throughout the whole hospital wing.  The person walking quickly broke the hushed quiet in Freddie Aron’s hospital room.  The special private-duty nurse, Miss Sheila, had begun her shift at midnight, and her patient, Mr. Aron, had given her his usual rundown of the day.  His wife and younger daughter had been with him most of the day, as well as many friends who could finally take turns for short visits now that he had moved to a step-down unit from the ICU.  And he’d spoken to his older daughter who lived 3,000 miles away....

Noblemen are presenting the 4th Annual Oktoberfest Event for all of Coastal Virginia  By Al Midgett, Founder and CEO I founded The Noblemen in 1995 in order to pay it forward in thanks for the gift of a surviving child from extreme prematurity who was given a 2% chance of survival.  The medical expenses exceeded a half million dollars and the Hampton Roads community jumped in and supported me in countless ways.    I have enjoyed the platform of helping local kids for almost 25 years.  We meet monthly and prepare and serve dinner to 40 to 50 members (out of 100) who have the time each month to talk about our recent philanthropy and discuss possible fun and upbeat ways to raise money to support what we do. It is truly a “connect the dots” mentality as we...
The Outrage Mob Goes Shopping

The Outrage Mob Goes Shopping

Business, Community, Headlines
By Kerry Dougherty It’s official. We’re turning into a nation of sniveling babies. Always looking for new ways to be offended. Exhibit A: Macy’s. Seems a “podcast host” most of us never heard of spied some novelty dinner plates in the popular department store and was so outraged by the sight of them that she started yapping. On her podcast, I presume. Next thing you know, the milquetoasts running the company knuckled under and announced that they’d stop the sale of the horrifying plates. What was on them, you ask. Something racist? Homophobic? Vulgar? Nope, the plates had concentric circles, for portions. The smallest said “skinny jeans” the next bigger had “favorite jeans” and the biggest circle said “mom jeans.” How dare they! Apparently these plates are guilty. G...
